Victory Day

Victory Day marks the defeat of Nazi Germany and remembers those who endured the Second World War. It combines gratitude to veterans and wartime workers with family remembrance and mourning for those who died.

How it is celebrated: people lay flowers at memorials, observe moments of silence and attend parades or commemorative concerts. Families revisit wartime photographs, letters and stories passed down through generations.

When the surrender signed in Berlin took effect, it was already 9 May in Moscow. That time difference helps explain why countries mark victory on different dates.
