Kyoto Protocol Day
February 16 · Level 7 · #789 of 2238

This day marks the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement in which countries committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. That happened on 16 February 2005.
How it is celebrated: climate scientists and environmental groups hold talks and panel discussions, schools run lessons on global warming, and companies share what they are doing to lower their emissions.
The protocol was adopted in the Japanese city of Kyoto on 11 December 1997, but it took more than seven years to take effect, because enough countries had to ratify it first.
