Pastry Day in Iceland

This unofficial day is for anyone with a sweet tooth: Icelanders treat themselves to pastries and cakes with their coffee. Coffee is a national habit there, and a good bake alongside it is close to a must.

How it is celebrated: people drop into local bakeries and cafés, pick up something fresh, share treats with friends and colleagues, and try a new flavour.

Iceland has a real bun tradition of its own. Before Lent comes Bolludagur, or Bun Day, when cream-filled buns are eaten. Children wake their parents with a tap from a decorated bun wand, and each tap earns a bun.
