Jordan Independence Day
May 25 · Level 10 · #111 of 2238

Jordan marks the day it left the British mandate behind and became an independent kingdom. It is the country's main national holiday, and pride in its own story runs high.
How it is celebrated: flags and portraits of the king appear across the country, official ceremonies and concerts take place, and fireworks light up the evening sky.
On this date in 1946, Emir Abdullah I was proclaimed king. The state took the name Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan a little later, in 1949.
