Africa Day
May 25 · Level 9 · #442 of 2238
Africa Day celebrates solidarity among African countries and the continent's rich variety of cultures. It commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, while making space to discuss shared achievements and ambitions.
How it is celebrated: concerts, exhibitions, public discussions and cultural festivals bring people together. African diaspora communities also host events around the world, sharing music, food and art with their neighbours.
Thirty-two independent countries founded the Organisation of African Unity. Its successor is the African Union, connecting the day's roots in the era of decolonisation with the continuing work of cooperation across the continent.
