International Day of the Deaf

International Day of the Deaf

This day is devoted to the rights, culture and languages of deaf people. It helps hearing people understand a world in which gestures and sight take the lead.

How it is celebrated: communities organise campaigns, festivals, lectures and meetings with sign language interpretation. In some cities well-known buildings are lit up in blue, and deaf communities gather for celebratory evenings.

The day is linked to the International Week of the Deaf, run by the World Federation of the Deaf. The federation itself was founded in Rome in 1951.
