Cathode Ray Tube Day
December 20 · Level 7 · #679 of 2238

Cathode Ray Tube Day honours the invention behind old-style televisions and monitors. It is a good excuse to remember what screens looked like before flat displays took over.
How it is celebrated: tech fans dust off vintage TVs and consoles, play retro games on bulging screens, and swap stories about fiddling with the aerial to get a clear picture.
The German physicist Karl Ferdinand Braun built the first cathode ray tube in 1897, and in 1909 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Guglielmo Marconi.
