Zamenhof Day is the birthday of L. L. Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto. He dreamed of a neutral second language that would help people from different countries understand one another.
How it is celebrated: Esperanto clubs hold meetings and festive dinners, read poems and stories in the language, set up book displays and swap titles in Esperanto.
Zamenhof was born in 1859 in Białystok. His first Esperanto textbook appeared in 1887 under the pen name Doctor Esperanto, and that pseudonym later became the name of the language itself.
