World Thermometer Day

A playful day for the humble device that settles whether you need a hat. It is a nudge to notice how much of daily life hangs on a few degrees.

How it is celebrated: people test whether the old kitchen thermometer still tells the truth, compare the reading outside the window with the one on the shelf, and show kids how these gadgets work. Some check their tea before the first sip.

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit built his mercury thermometer in 1714. The Celsius scale began upside down: in Anders Celsius's own version, 0 was the boiling point of water and 100 was the freezing point.
