Power Engineers' Day

Power Engineers' Day honours the people who generate electricity and heat and deliver them to homes, factories and schools. In Russia it falls on 22 December, around the longest night of the year, when light matters most.

How it is celebrated: companies hold award ceremonies and festive meetings, and colleagues congratulate each other. The duty shifts still work as usual, because the grid cannot be left unattended in winter.

The date was not picked at random: on 22 December 1920 the Eighth All-Russian Congress of Soviets approved the GOELRO plan for electrifying the country.
