Hydrometeorologists of the Russian Armed Forces tell the army, air force and navy what the weather and the sea will do. This day is a thank-you to the people whose reports decide when planes take off, ships sail and guns fire.
How it is celebrated: units and offices of the service hold ceremonial meetings, hand out awards and invite veterans to talk. Colleagues exchange greetings and swap stories about their toughest weather shifts.
When artillery crews calculate a shot, they correct it for wind, temperature and air density, and the figures for those corrections come from meteorologists.
