World Rice Day

World Rice Day

This day is a nod to rice, the grain that feeds half the planet. It reminds us how much food security depends on this crop and on the farmers who grow it.

How it is celebrated: people hold exhibitions and talks on sustainable farming, and cook rice dishes at home and in restaurants, from pilaf and risotto to sushi and sweet rice pudding.

Rice is the staple food for more than half of the world's population, and the United Nations once devoted a whole year to it: 2004 was the International Year of Rice.
