World Marine Mammal Day
February 19 · Level 7 · #781 of 2238

Whales, dolphins, seals and manatees have one thing in common: they breathe air and nurse their young with milk, yet they live in the sea. This day reminds us that they need clean water, quieter oceans and safe routes to travel.
How it is celebrated: marine biologists and aquariums give talks and open lessons, volunteers clean up beaches, and enthusiasts go out to watch whales and seals from the shore or by boat. Schools make posters and talk about keeping plastic out of the water.
Sea otters have no layer of blubber like whales do. They stay warm thanks to the densest fur of any animal.
