International Tug of War Day
February 19 · Level 8 · #574 of 2238

This is a day for the simplest team game there is: two sides, one rope and a lot of shared effort. It reminds us that tug of war is a proper sport, not just a picnic pastime.
How it is celebrated: schools, parks and offices set up friendly matches. Teams dig in their heels and pull together, while onlookers cheer and shout advice from the sidelines.
Tug of war was once an Olympic sport, appearing at the Games from 1900 to 1920. Strength helps, but teamwork wins: a squad that pulls in perfect rhythm can beat a heavier one that doesn't.
