Prevent Plagiarism Day
February 19 · Level 5 · #1277 of 2238

This day is a nudge toward honest authorship and respect for other people's work. The idea is simple: every thought, text or picture should carry the name of the person who made it.
How it is celebrated: schools and universities run lessons on citing sources and building reference lists. Teachers talk with students about the difference between inspiration and copying, and writers run their drafts through originality checks.
The word plagiarism comes from the Latin plagiarius, meaning a kidnapper. The Roman poet Martial used it for a man who passed off his verses as his own, and the label stuck for two thousand years.
