Book Giving Day in Armenia
February 19 · Level 2 · #1908 of 2238

On this day Armenians give books as presents, so that more people find time to read. It also backs libraries and shows that a good book makes a fine gift for no reason at all.
How it is celebrated: readers give books to friends and children, hold book swaps and public readings, and collect volumes for small and village libraries. Bookshops and schools often join in.
The Armenian alphabet was created by the scholar and monk Mesrop Mashtots around the turn of the 5th century, and the Matenadaran in Yerevan holds thousands of ancient manuscripts.
