World Lindy Hop Day
May 26 · Level 8 · #549 of 2238

A day for swing dancers who love the lively, joyful partner dance that came out of Harlem. It falls on 26 May for a reason: that is the birthday of Frankie Manning, one of the best-known names in lindy hop.
How it is celebrated: dancers around the world meet for social dances and open classes, stage flash mobs in squares and parks, and swing out to live big bands or old jazz records.
Lindy hop took shape in New York in the late 1920s, and its home floor was the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Frankie Manning is credited with the first aerial, or air step, performed there in 1935.
