Sardarapat Victory Day

Sardarapat Victory Day remembers the Armenian forces that halted an Ottoman advance in May 1918. Their victory helped make an independent Armenian state possible and became an enduring symbol of people joining together in defence of their homeland.
How it is celebrated: visitors lay flowers and wreaths at the Sardarapat memorial. Commemorative ceremonies, concerts and historical exhibitions honour the soldiers, volunteers and local people involved in the defence.
The memorial complex opened in 1968, fifty years after the battle. Its enormous winged bulls and tall bell tower give this place of remembrance a distinctive silhouette.
