World Dracula Day
May 26 · Level 9 · #422 of 2238

A day for the most famous vampire in literature and the man who dreamed him up. It marks 26 May 1897, the date Bram Stoker's novel Dracula was published.
How it is celebrated: fans reread the book, line up film marathons of the many adaptations, and dress up in capes and fangs. In Whitby, the English seaside town where part of the story is set, there are costumed walks and readings.
Stoker holidayed in Whitby in 1890, and its harbour and ruined abbey on the cliff left a mark on the book. In the novel, Count Dracula comes ashore at Whitby in the shape of a large dog, from a wrecked ship.
