Snow Leopard Day in Altai
May 26 · Level 5 · #1147 of 2238
Snow Leopard Day in Altai draws attention to the elusive mountain cat and the habitats it needs to survive. It gives local communities a chance to learn about a rare neighbour that few people ever see in the wild.
How it is celebrated: environmental lessons, exhibitions and children's creative competitions introduce snow leopard behaviour and conservation. Activities also explain how researchers use camera traps to study animals across remote mountain terrain.
Every snow leopard has its own pattern of spots. Researchers can use those markings to recognise individuals in photographs, gathering information without approaching these exceptionally wary cats.
