World Day Against Speciesism
June 5 · Level 7 · #704 of 2238

This day draws attention to the idea that a living being should not be treated worse simply because it belongs to another species. It is a prompt to think about how people treat animals.
How it is celebrated: activists organise talks, debates, film screenings and street stalls, and they share information about plant-based eating and animal shelters. Others simply start a conversation at home about what counts as fair treatment of animals.
The word speciesism, modelled on racism, was coined by British psychologist Richard Ryder in 1970, and philosopher Peter Singer later spread the idea widely in his book Animal Liberation.
