This is a professional day for Russia's police officers, who keep order and look after public safety. It is a chance to thank people whose work usually goes unnoticed.
How it is celebrated: units hold festive meetings, the best officers receive certificates and thanks, and colleagues and veterans gather for a celebratory meal.
On 1 March 2011 the Russian militsiya officially became the police. The change followed a law on the police signed on 7 February 2011.
