Danish Constitution Day
June 5 · Level 4 · #1433 of 2238

Danes remember the day their country got a constitution and stopped being an absolute monarchy. The holiday is called Grundlovsdag, and it feels more like a civic celebration than a formal day off.
How it is celebrated: people gather in parks and squares for political speeches, then stay for picnics, coffee and the red-and-white Dannebrog flag.
King Frederik VII signed the constitution on 5 June 1849. The date is also Father's Day in Denmark, and many workplaces give employees the afternoon off.
