International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

This day reminds us that illegal fishing drains ocean stocks and takes income from honest fishers. It aims to draw attention to the problem and shows that it can only be tackled together.

How it is celebrated: conferences and awareness campaigns take place, and organisations and ports explain how to trace where a catch comes from and how vessels are inspected.

The UN General Assembly established the day in 2017. The Port State Measures Agreement, which entered into force in 2016, was the first binding international treaty aimed specifically at this kind of fishing.
