World Coconut Day
September 2 · Level 5 · #1176 of 2238

This day celebrates the coconut palm and everything it gives us, from water and milk to oil and rope. It falls on 2 September, the anniversary of the founding of the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, an organisation of coconut-producing countries.
How it is celebrated: in coconut-growing regions there are exhibitions, farmer workshops and tastings. Elsewhere people simply crack open a coconut, sip the water, bake with desiccated coconut or cook a curry in coconut milk.
Botanically, a coconut is not a true nut but a drupe, the same type of fruit as a plum or a cherry. Its buoyant fruit can drift across the sea and sprout on a distant shore.
