Calendar Adjustment Day

This day recalls the year 1752, when Britain and its colonies dropped the Julian calendar for the Gregorian one. Some dates had to be skipped so the calendar would line up with the astronomical year.

How it is celebrated: people joke about the "missing" days, flip through old calendars and swap trivia about how we measure time. Others use the day to tidy up their schedules and plan the month ahead.

In Britain and its colonies, 2 September 1752 was followed straight by 14 September. Eleven dates simply vanished from the calendar.
