World Anglo-Indian Day

This day honours Anglo-Indians, a community with both Indian and British roots. It recalls their history, their language and what they have given to the culture of India and other countries.

How it is celebrated: Anglo-Indian communities in India, Britain, Australia and elsewhere hold reunions, concerts and family lunches. Dishes of Anglo-Indian cooking, such as mulligatawny soup, often feature on the table.

Until 2020, the Constitution of India allowed two members of the community to be nominated to the lower house of Parliament. The name mulligatawny comes from a Tamil phrase meaning "pepper water".
