Russian Airborne Forces Day
August 2 · Level 10 · #57 of 2238
Russian Airborne Forces Day honours serving paratroopers and veterans. It brings former comrades together and offers a moment to remember the history of airborne units and those who died in service.
How it is celebrated: military ceremonies, wreath-laying and veterans’ reunions mark the occasion. Public programmes may feature parachute demonstrations, displays of equipment and military performances. Blue berets and striped undershirts are familiar sights at gatherings.
The service traces its beginnings to a training exercise near Voronezh in 1930, when a group of just 12 parachutists made an airborne landing.
