World AIDS Vaccine Day

This day keeps the search for an HIV vaccine in the spotlight and thanks everyone who takes part in it. It draws attention to research that could one day end the epidemic for good.

How it is celebrated: research centres and community groups talk about the progress of trials, hold lectures and meetings, and scientists and doctors thank the volunteers who join clinical studies.

The date goes back to a speech by US President Bill Clinton at Morgan State University on 18 May 1997, in which he called for an HIV vaccine to be found within a decade.
