Russian Baltic Fleet Day
May 18 · Level 9 · #285 of 2238

Russian Baltic Fleet Day honours the fleet's sailors, veterans and civilian specialists. It connects their service with the history of a fleet established under Peter the Great during the Great Northern War.
How it is celebrated: observances include ceremonial assemblies, awards and meetings with veterans. Flowers are laid at naval memorials, and museums introduce visitors to ships, maritime occupations and Baltic naval history.
The commemorative date recalls a victory at the mouth of the Neva in 1703. Russian troops in rowing boats captured two Swedish vessels, with Peter the Great personally taking part.
