International Museum Day
May 18 · Level 7 · #676 of 2238

International Museum Day celebrates places where objects reveal stories about people, nature and the past. It highlights museums as spaces for learning and conversation, where a familiar subject can suddenly look quite different.
How it is celebrated: museums arrange special tours, talks with collection staff, workshops and temporary exhibitions. Some offer free admission or extended opening hours, with each institution choosing its own programme.
The International Council of Museums established the day in 1977. The decision was made at the organization's General Assembly in Moscow, giving this worldwide occasion a very specific birthplace.
