Russian Onion Day
September 9 · Level 1 · #2139 of 2238

Russian Onion Day is an informal food occasion celebrating a vegetable that usually works behind the scenes. Onions bring flavour to soups, pies and salads, while gardeners have plenty to discuss about harvesting and storing them.
How it is celebrated: home cooks share onion recipes, and gardeners exchange advice on growing bulbs and keeping their harvest in good condition. There is no single established programme for the day.
An onion bulb is not a root, even though it grows underground. Most of it consists of thickened leaf bases that store nutrients for the plant.
