International FASD Awareness Day

This day draws attention to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, the lifelong conditions that can follow when alcohol is consumed during pregnancy. They are entirely preventable, and knowing that is the first step.

How it is celebrated: health workers and charities hold talks and information campaigns, families share their stories, and in some places people pause for a minute of reflection at 9:09 in the morning.

The date carries a message: the ninth day of the ninth month points to the nine months of pregnancy, during which avoiding alcohol is the safest choice.
