World Smile Day

World Smile Day celebrates the small acts of kindness that give someone a reason to smile. Artist Harvey Ball started it to bring the familiar yellow smiley back to a simple idea: making another person's day a little brighter.

How it is celebrated: people support charity events, share cheerful cards and surprise friends, colleagues or strangers with thoughtful gestures. A kind deed matters more than posing for a happy photograph.

Ball created his famous smiley face in 1963, decades before emoji became part of everyday phone conversations.
