Gandhi Jayanti is India's national holiday marking Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. It honours a leader of the independence movement whose approach to public protest placed nonviolence at its heart.
How it is celebrated: visitors offer flowers and attend prayer gatherings at Raj Ghat, Gandhi's memorial in Delhi. Schools explore his life, devotional songs are performed, and community clean-up activities put his emphasis on cleanliness into practice.
The birthday also became a global observance: in 2007, the United Nations designated it the International Day of Non-Violence.
