Upcycling Day

Upcycling means giving old items or waste a second life as something more useful or more beautiful than before. The day is a nudge to let creativity cut down on what we throw away.

How it is celebrated: people turn jars into pencil holders, worn jeans into tote bags and shipping pallets into garden furniture. Many join workshops and swap events, and teams challenge each other to make something clever from office clutter.

Unlike ordinary recycling, upcycling does not break a material down into raw stock. The object keeps its shape and simply gets a new job, which usually takes far less energy.
