Scottish Independence Day

Scottish Independence Day is an unofficial name associated with the anniversary of Bannockburn in 1314. Robert the Bruce’s army defeated the forces of England’s Edward II, making the battle a landmark in Scotland’s struggle for independence.

How it is celebrated: commemorative gatherings and wreath-laying take place at the battlefield. Historical tours and occasional reenactments explore the fighting and the lives of those involved.

Victory did not secure immediate recognition. England formally recognised Scottish independence through a treaty in 1328, fourteen years after the battle.
