Day of the Indian in Peru

Day of the Indian is the historical name of a Peruvian observance honouring Indigenous people. The date is now known as Farmers’ Day, recognising rural workers, many of whom also sustain Indigenous languages, knowledge and traditions.

How it is celebrated: agricultural fairs and local gatherings showcase regional produce, crafts, music and dancing. Communities also pay tribute to the people who work the land.

The occasion was renamed in 1969 during Peru’s agrarian reform. The older name found in some calendars and today’s Farmers’ Day therefore refer to the same observance.
