Tunisia Independence Day
March 20 · Level 9 · #361 of 2238

Tunisia’s Independence Day remembers the recognition of its independence from France in 1956. It honours the national movement and negotiations that ended the French protectorate, allowing Tunisians to determine their country’s future.
How it is celebrated: official ceremonies, commemorations and wreath-laying mark the occasion. National flags and programmes about the independence struggle bring the country’s history into public spaces and family conversations.
Independence and republican government arrived separately. Tunisia remained a monarchy immediately after the protectorate ended; the republic was proclaimed the following year, in 1957.
