Earth Day
March 20 · Level 10 · #106 of 2238
This Earth Day follows the March equinox, inviting people to care for the planet as a shared home. Its message brings environmental responsibility together with peace: the air and oceans connect people across national borders.
How it is celebrated: gatherings include environmental education, peace ceremonies and moments of silence. Ringing the Peace Bell at United Nations headquarters is a well-known equinox tradition.
Earth Day has two distinct roots. John McConnell proposed the equinox observance; the better-known April celebration developed from a separate environmental initiative.
