French Language Day at the UN
March 20 · Level 5 · #1240 of 2238

On this day the United Nations celebrates French, one of its six official languages. It backs the idea that speaking many languages helps people understand each other.
How it is celebrated: UN offices host talks, exhibitions and concerts. Diplomats and staff read poems, explore French-language literature and sample the food of Francophone countries.
The UN's language days began in 2010, and French is marked on 20 March, the same date as the International Day of Francophonie. Together with English, French is a working language of the UN Secretariat.
