International Francophonie Day
March 20 · Level 5 · #1165 of 2238

International Francophonie Day brings together French speakers and anyone curious about the cultures they share. It celebrates a common language with many distinct voices, connecting communities across continents without making their stories the same.
How it is celebrated: cultural centres, schools and libraries organise concerts, film screenings, readings and language games. Programmes feature writers and performers from different countries, opening a window onto French-speaking life far beyond France.
The date recalls the 1970 agreement establishing the predecessor of the International Organisation of La Francophonie. It was signed in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
