Star Wars Day
May 4 · Level 9 · #434 of 2238
Star Wars Day is an unofficial fan holiday on 4 May. It runs on a pun: "May the Fourth" sounds almost exactly like "May the Force", the saga's famous blessing.
How it is celebrated: fans dress as Jedi and stormtroopers, hold movie marathons and themed parties, join cinema screenings, and fill social media with quotes and jokes from the films.
The pun is often traced to 4 May 1979, when a London newspaper ad congratulated Margaret Thatcher on becoming prime minister with the line "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie".
