International Respect for Chickens Day
May 4 · Level 5 · #1214 of 2238

This day draws attention to chickens and the way people treat them. It invites us to see a very familiar bird as a creature with a personality of its own.
How it is celebrated: animal-protection groups hold events and set up information stands, and many people cook meals without meat or eggs for the day. Some visit sanctuaries where rescued hens roam freely.
All domestic chickens descend from the red junglefowl, a wild bird of Southeast Asia, which people began to keep several thousand years ago.
