Youth Day in China
May 4 · Level 10 · #93 of 2238

China's Youth Day recognises young people's role in the country's public life. It recalls the May Fourth Movement of 1919, which began with student protests in Beijing and became a major force in China's political and cultural history.
How it is celebrated: schools and youth organisations hold ceremonies, talks and performances exploring the movement's legacy. Young people also take part in volunteering, community projects and cultural activities.
The original protests were sparked by a dispute over Shandong: Germany's rights there were to pass to Japan after the First World War. An international settlement helped ignite a much broader movement for change within China.
