Restoration of Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia

Latvia marks the declaration adopted on 4 May 1990 to restore its independence. The public holiday honours the recovery of national sovereignty and the people who worked to make it possible.

How it is celebrated: national flags are displayed, flowers are laid at Riga's Freedom Monument, and concerts bring people together. Families, friends and neighbours also share meals at tables covered with white tablecloths, exchanging memories and thoughts about their country.

The white tablecloth has become the centrepiece of a modern holiday tradition. A gathering at home or in a shared courtyard turns a milestone in national history into something personal.
