Sponge Cake Day

Light, airy sponge is the backbone of a British teatime, and this day gives the cake its moment. The classic version is two layers sandwiched with jam and cream.

How it is celebrated: people bake sponges at home, invite friends round for a cuppa, and bakeries and cafes put their best slices on show. Some hold friendly contests over whose cake rises highest.

The Victoria sponge is named after Queen Victoria, who is said to have enjoyed a slice with her afternoon tea.
