Internaut Day
August 23 · Level 8 · #587 of 2238
A day for everyone who lives, works and plays online. It is tied to 23 August 1991, when the World Wide Web was opened to the public.
How it is celebrated: people look back at their first websites, email addresses and forums, and swap old screenshots and jokes from the early internet. Some take a digital detox for an evening, just to see the web from the outside.
The web was invented by the British scientist Tim Berners-Lee while he worked at CERN. The word "internaut" blends "internet" with "astronaut" or "argonaut": a traveller of the online world.
