Seafarers' Day in Iceland

Iceland's Seafarers' Day honours people who work at sea, especially fishing crews. It is also a celebration of coastal communities, where a harbour can hold generations of family history as well as boats.

How it is celebrated: harbour towns host concerts, competitions and activities for families. Experienced seafarers receive recognition, while memorial ceremonies remember those lost at sea. Each community brings its own traditions to the programme.

Rowing races and rope-handling contests can be part of the festivities. Skills used for demanding work aboard a vessel become something the whole town can cheer from shore.
