Singles' Day in China
November 11 · Level 10 · #88 of 2238

Singles' Day is an informal Chinese celebration of people who are not in a romantic relationship. With roots in student culture, it takes a playful approach to being single: friendship and a good evening need no romantic occasion.
How it is celebrated: friends share meals, organise parties or attend matchmaking events. Some people buy themselves a present, and large sales have made shopping a prominent part of the day.
The date supplies the visual joke: 11/11 contains four ones, each standing alone. Despite sometimes being called Bachelors' Day, the celebration includes women too.
